Snow geese weren’t the only migrators at Freezout Lake last week. We were thrilled to discover a healthy bunch of bald eagles gathered at the south end of the lake. We counted at least fifty of them – all ages – sitting on the ice. They were buzzing the ducks, keeping an eye on the snow geese, and squabbling over fish they’d caught.
But they spent most of their time standing around on the ice, looking at each other. (If you look carefully at the picture below, you can see skeins of snow geese in the sky. They’d look like they’d want to land in the open water, but would veer off in a panic when they noticed the eagles.)

I thought it was pretty amazing, too! They’ve certainly made one heck of a comeback.
Oh, that is so amazing! I’ve never seen that many eagles in one place. The most I’ve ever seen were on a boat tour of the Missouri River just outside of Helena, at the Gates of the Mountains. We had such fun spotting the eagles in the trees along the edge of the river. There are were also many young bald eagles who didn’t have their white head feathers yet.
That was probably about the same time when the salmon were spawning in the Missouri, and the eagles were all over the place. Pretty cool.
I never thought about that. We’ve done the boat trip several times and it’s always such a great time.

It was pretty surprising! Eagles have made such an amazing comeback that it’s not unusual to see them anymore, but they still thrill me.
